In a world beyond the sunset, the battle to save imagination begins.
A middle-grade portal fantasy by Andrea Kilpatrick
- About Luminos
Discover Luminos
Twelve-year-old Kaia has always escaped into her paintings. She never expected one of them to become a doorway. Beyond it lies Luminos, a hidden world beyond the sunset — and the source of creativity on Earth.
Luminos is a world where artists, musicians and storytellers give life to creativity itself.
Paintings can open paths.
Songs can carry feelings.
Stories can shape the world itself.
But something is wrong.
The light of Luminos is fading. Creativity is being drained from the world, and if Luminos falls, the imagination of children on Earth may fade with it.
With the help of unexpected friends, Kaia must journey deeper into Luminos, discover the strength of her own gifts, and face dangers she never imagined.
Luminos is a portal-fantasy adventure about courage, creativity, belonging, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, where we belong, and who we are capable of becoming.
A Hidden World. A Fading Light. An Imagination Worth Fighting For.
- About the Author
Andrea Kilpatrick
I have always loved books for the worlds they opened—and for the chance they gave me to imagine who I might be inside them. As a child, I could disappear into a story and come back feeling a little braver, a little larger, and a little more myself.
That love of story has stayed with me. Much of my career has been spent helping people discover and develop their gifts. Before establishing my corporate advisory practice, I founded Cool Kids Learn, an after-school arts and enrichment program that began in Miami, Florida, and expanded to serve children in other states. That work deepened my belief that young people thrive in spaces where imagination, self-expression, and possibility are encouraged.
My debut middle-grade novel, Luminos, grew out of that lifelong love of books, as well as my belief that imagination can help young people understand who they are and who they are becoming. I hold an MFA in Writing from the Sena Jeter Naslund-Karen Mann Graduate School of Writing at Spalding University.
I currently divide my time between New York City and Lyon, France, with my very cool cat, Violet, who travels with me all over the world.

- CHAPTER 1
“Should we stop?” Aunt Meg’s question pierced the air.
Kaia jerked up from her book. “No!” she said. Then clapped her hand to her mouth. She doubted Aunt Meg and Uncle Mike had heard her from the minivan’s third row seat.
